Scuffle at JNU: Violent clash between ABVP, AISA; Several injured

NEW DELHI: A scuffle broke out between the political rivalries, ABVP and All India Students’ Association (AISA), in the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Sunday evening. The clash broke out between two sections of student organizations after one group disrupted the other during a meeting at JNUSU office.

As per the AISA, “An organisation had booked the JNUSU office for 14 November evening to hold their organisational programme. For the last two days that organisation had put up posters for the same programme.”

“On the night of 14 November, when the organisers reached the JNUSU office to begin their programme, they found that the JNUSU office was occupied by some 15 members of ABVP. Activists from AISA along with the organisers of the meeting tried to convince the ABVP activists, asking them to leave the Union Office and let the said organization continue with their programme. ABVP lumpens started abusing them and catcalling,” AISA added.

Situation turned tense after students started raising slogans against students' organisations. Several students were left injured and many students who sustained injuries were rushed to hospital.

On the other hand, ABVP said, “JNUSU and left parties in their trance of the dictatorial powers of communism in USSR have brought out the decree that only JNUSU President can give permissions for using the Student Activities Centre.

And to impose this they resorted to collective violence on ABVP activists having a peaceful gathering in the Teflas. Where they brutally assaulted a first year MA student and manhandled a Divyang student.”

It further added that “It is as psychotic as it is dangerous for the independent environment of campus where the leaders we elect are to represent us and not bestowing "permissions" on where we can assemble and where we can not.”

Meanwhile, AISA has called upon the student community to participate in the protest march called by JNUSU against “ABVP's lumpenism” today, on November 15, from 5:30 pm from Ganga Dhaba.

Aishe Ghosh, president of the JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU), wrote on Twitter, “ABVP'S GOONS UNLEASHED VIOLENCE IN JNU TODAY. Time and again these criminals have unleashed violence on students and have disrupted campus democracy. Will the JNU Administration still be silent ? Will no actions be taken on the goons ?”
