NEW DELHI: SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), Chengalpet, Tamil Nadu, has been at the forefront of integrating emerging technologies into education, fostering global partnerships, and enhancing student employability. C. Muthamizhchelvan, vice chancellor of the institute, during an interview with Careers360, talks about the institution’s academic vision, research advancements, and industry collaborations. He also throws light on how the university is adapting to the rapid digital transformation. Edited excerpts:

SRMIST has built a strong reputation in education and research. What are your focus areas when it comes to academic growth and research?

At SRMIST, we are committed to providing top-tier education and driving impactful research.

In terms of academics, we emphasise a multidisciplinary approach integrating engineering, medicine, management, and humanities to give students well-rounded education. Our curriculum is designed to be competency-based, focusing on employability, entrepreneurship, and modern learning methods like ‘Design Thinking’.

We also prioritise global exposure, forming partnerships with international universities to offer students broader learning opportunities. And of course, we are heavily investing in digital education with advanced e-learning platforms, AI tools, and revamped programmes like civil and mechanical engineering infused with AI applications.

For research, we have 18 centers of excellence dedicated to innovation and state-of-the-art infrastructure like the CV Raman Research Park. We actively encourage patent filing and collaborative research, partnering with leading global institutions. Our goal is to increase joint publications from 30% to 40% and leverage our 450+ granted patents to collaborate with industries for research funding and consultancy.

Technology and AI are advancing rapidly. How is SRMIST keeping up with these changes?

We continuously update our programmes to ensure students are industry-ready in a tech-driven world. AI, data analytics, and emerging technologies are now an integral part of our curriculum. We have introduced smart classrooms, virtual labs, interactive simulations, and adaptive learning platforms.

Our teaching-learning process (TLP) integrates AI, ensuring that students gain practical exposure to cutting-edge technology. It’s all about blending traditional education with modern digital transformation.

How does SRMIST strengthen industry connections and improve student employability?

We take a very proactive approach to industry collaboration and career readiness. We have signed MoUs with top multinational companies to facilitate knowledge sharing, internships, and research projects. Our students engage in live projects and case studies, working on real-world challenges in AI, cybersecurity, healthcare, and renewable energy. Industry leaders are actively involved in shaping our curriculum through Corporate Advisory Boards.

Additionally, students undergo mandatory internships, receive technical and soft skills training, and participate in hackathons and competitions to boost innovation and problem-solving abilities. Our dedicated placement team works closely with recruiters to provide job opportunities, and we offer pre-placement training with resume-building workshops, mock interviews, and aptitude tests.

How does SRMIST integrate internships and real-world experience into academics?

Practical experience is a core part of our education model. Every student must complete an internship before graduating, gaining first-hand industry exposure. We have advanced AI, robotics, biotechnology, cybersecurity, and smart manufacturing labs. Experts from leading tech companies conduct industry-driven workshops and certifications. Students work on interdisciplinary capstone projects tackling global challenges like sustainability, healthcare, and smart cities. Our incubation centers and startup boot camps help students develop and pitch business ideas.

Does SRMIST collaborate with companies to provide hands-on industry experience?

Absolutely! We have long-standing partnerships with most Fortune 500 companies. Our corporate relations team ensures that these companies engage with students through internships, projects, and research collaborations at multiple levels.

Beyond academics, how does SRMIST support student well-being?

We take a holistic approach. Our directorate of student affairs offers counseling and organises cultural activities. The value education cell conducts programmes on ethics and environmental concerns.

Sports and fitness are also a priority—we have a massive Olympic-standard swimming pool and state-of-the-art sports facilities. Plus, our Wellness Center provides both physical and virtual counseling services to support mental health.

Does SRMIST offer scholarships or financial aid?

Yes, we believe that education should be accessible to all. We offer a variety of scholarships and financial aid programmes, including support for meritorious students, economically disadvantaged students, and students from special categories. We also have an alumni scholarship programme to strengthen ties with our graduates and help their families.

How has the placement scenario changed in recent years at SRMIST?

With the rapid digital transformation, SRMIST has become a top choice for Global Capability Centers (GCCs). In the last few years, 70% of our placements have been in GCCs, which is a significant shift from the earlier IT services-based recruitment trend.

Are there specific industries where SRMIST graduates are in high demand?

Yes, our graduates are particularly sought after in software industries, AI, cybersecurity, healthcare technology, and renewable energy sectors.

What steps do you take to ensure students are job-ready by graduation?

We have a comprehensive approach to career readiness. Our curriculum is industry-aligned, ensuring that students gain relevant certifications. Internships and placement programmes provide hands-on exposure to the professional world. We focus on skill development through career training programmes, and students benefit from global networking and mentorship opportunities. With a strong track record of high placement success rates, our graduates step into the job market with confidence and competence.

Are there any other key initiatives we should highlight?

Yes! We are actively working on sustainability and green campus initiatives, women empowerment and diversity programmes, digital transformation and smart campus development, community service and social impact projects, and strengthening our global rankings and accreditations. We believe these initiatives make SRMIST not just an academic institution but a place where students grow into responsible and successful individuals.

Finally, what advice would you give to students starting their undergraduate journey?

My advice would be to embrace hands-on learning — get involved in internships, research, and hackathons. Think beyond one field; the future belongs to interdisciplinary thinkers, whether it’s blending AI with healthcare or coding with finance. Be resilient — learning comes from both successes and failures, so stay adaptable and open to new opportunities. Take care of your well-being because mental and physical health are just as important as academic achievements. And finally, dream big but stay ethical. Explore global opportunities, but always let strong values guide your path.

With the right mindset and resources, students at SRMIST are prepared to make a meaningful impact in the world!
