NEW DELHI, AUGUST 24: The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru is the only Indian institution among the top 500 universities in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) popularly known as Shanghai Rankings 2018. The news is not very encouraging for Indian institutions as IISc has slipped over 100 position from its 2017 Rank.

Harvard University maintains its top rank for the 16th year while Stanford and Cambridge occupy the second and third position, respectively. Nine of the top ten universities in the list are from the United States, with the exception of the University of Oxford.

There are 15 Indian universities in the ARWU Rankings, University of Calcutta (501-600), Indian Institute of Technology Madras (601-700), Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (701-800), Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (701-800), Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (701-800), Jawaharlal Nehru University (701-800), University of Delhi (701-800), Banaras Hindu University (801-900), Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (801-900), Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (801-900), Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (801-900), All India Institute of Medical Sciences (901-1000), Anna University (901-1000), Jadavpur University (901-1000), Panjab University (901-1000).
