NEW DELHI, JUNE 21: The Union Ministry of Shipping has initiated the process for appointment of new Vice-Chancellor of the Indian Maritime University (IMU), which has been running headless for over a year now.

The Government has formed a three-member search committee headed by the former Director-General of Shipping, Gautam Chatterjee to shortlist candidates to be recommended for appointment. Recently, the government has also increased age limit for applicants from 60 to 70 years.

The shortlisted candidates include an acting VC, a senior professor working at the university, five retired professors as well as an industry expert with teaching and research experience.

The IMU has been running without a full-time VC for over a year as, K. Ashok Vardhan Shetty, the former VC resigned in May last year with over a year and seven months left in his tenure.

Shetty had also served as the Principal Secretary to the Government of Tamil Nadu resigned from the post of VC citing personal reasons. His resignation was accepted by the President of India, who is the Visitor to the IMU.

Reportedly, the search committee for the first time has asked the applicants to make presentations and attend discussions with the search committee.
