Summer Vacation: Short break this year for schools, colleges; know state-wise holidays
State-wise decisions on summer vacation for schools, colleges. Several states have decided to shut schools and change timings amid heat wave.

NEW DELHI: State governments have started announcing summer vacation for schools and colleges amid the prevailing heat wave condition. However, this year, several states have decided to curtail summer vacation to compensate for the learning loss during the Covid-19 pandemic which forced schools, colleges and other educational institutions to shut down.

States have also announced to complete all examinations for the academic year 2021-22 by May. Meanwhile, some schools in Noida have been shut down after Covid-19 cases were reported. Know state-wise decisions on summer vacation for schools, colleges here.
Maharashtra
The Maharashtra government had announced summer vacation for students of Classes 1 to 9 and 11 from May 2 to June 12. The next academic session will begin on June 13 except in Vidarbha, where the educational institutes will reopen on June 27 owing to high day temperatures in the region during the period, as per the circular.
The state government has also decided to hold ‘full day’ classes till April 30 to compensate for the academic loss during the pandemic. The state education department is also expected to declare the results for Classes 1 to 9 and 11 in May.
Uttar Pradesh
As per the Uttar Pradesh academic calendar 2022, the summer vacation for students will begin from May 21 to June 30, 2022. UP schools will remain closed for a total of 113 days while students will be attending classes for a total of 237 days this year.
Odisha
The Odisha government has curtailed the summer vacation from 45 days to 10 days. Principal Secretary of the Higher Education department, Saswat Mishra, said the vacation will now be allowed for a brief period from June 1 to June 16.
Teachers and other employees of the educational institutions would now be entitled for additional proportionate earned leave in lieu of the curtailment of the summer vacation, the letter said, as per the PTI report.
Chattisgarh
Chattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel informed that the Chhattisgarh school education department has decided to give summer vacation to school students from April 24 to June 14, 2022.
Due to the severe heat wave condition, school timings have also changed. Morning classes for Classes 1 to 8 will begin from 6:30 am to 10:30 am. For Classes 9 to 12, classes are scheduled to be held from 7 am to 11:30 am.
Andhra Pradesh
The summer vacation for Andhra Pradesh schools will begin from May 6 to July 4. All examinations in the 2021-22 academic year would be complete by May 4 and the baseline assessment of English on the 5th, the PTI reported. The academic year 2022-23 will begin from July 4, 2022.
Kerala
Kerala education minister V Sivankutty last month announced that the schools in the state will reopen for the next academic year on June 1, 2022. He also assured that the books for the next academic year will be distributed before June 1.
