Summer vacation extended in West Bengal till June 26 due to severe heatwave

NEW DELHI: Summer vacations for schools have been extended till June 26 in the state of West Bengal owing to the heatwave conditions prevailing in the state. However, this extension is not applicable to the schools in hilly areas of the Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts.

The West Bengal government took the decision to extend the summer vacation, considering the safety and security of the students, amidst reports of a few death cases due to the scorching heat and humidity in the state. The school education department of West Bengal informed that the existing academic schedule will continue in schools in hilly areas of the Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts.

"In continuation to this office No. 146-SSE/2022 dt 27/04/200 with regard to declaring summer vacations in the schools due to extreme heatwave conditions, as reports of a few death cases due to heat and humidity have been received, the competent authority has decided to extend the summer vacation till 26th June, 2022 or until further instructions whichever is earlier except for the schools in hilly areas of the Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts wherein existing academic schedule may continue until further order," says a letter from the West Bengal school education department.

Earlier, the West Bengal school education department had issued a letter to declare early summer vacation from May 2 to June 15 due to the heatwave situation in the state. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee had also asked the state education minister to announce a summer vacation in schools and colleges from May 2 due to the heatwave prevailing in the state.
