Tamil Nadu SCERT shares model syllabi for primary classes with curriculum committee, education minister

The Tamil Nadu School Education Department conducted the second meeting on curriculum and syllabus development under the Tamil Nadu state education policy 2025 today, December 11. The session followed the first meeting of the high-level expert committee and the curriculum design committee held on November 24.

According to the official press release, Chandra Mohan B, principal secretary of the school education department and vice-chairperson of the high-level committee, briefed members on the curriculum work completed so far in today’s meeting. He said textbooks should be designed to engage students and support future learning needs.

Committee chairperson Sultan Ahmed Ismail outlined the need for the curriculum and textbooks to use simple language and include reduced, age-appropriate content.

The official release further states that officials and committee members reviewed the progress made by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) on draft model syllabi for primary classes. The meeting took place at the first-floor conference hall of the Puratchi Thalaivar Dr MGR Centenary Building in the Professor Anbalagan Education Campus.

SCERT presents draft primary syllabi for review

According to the Tamil Nadu school education department, SCERT presented model syllabi prepared in line with the Tamil Nadu state education policy 2025, which places focus on inclusiveness, equity and future preparedness. Committee members held detailed discussions on the documents and made suggestions, keeping current learning needs in view.

Subject experts including Rita John (physics), Mu. Sudandhiramuthu (former Associate Professor), Na. Madhivanan (botany), Tha. Asogan (history), Uma Raman (English Language Teaching), Pa. Mahaveer (mathematics), Maniam Selvan, educator R Santhana Devan, DIET Principal Mu. Selvam and Government Higher Secondary School teacher Sreedhilip participated. They recommended restructuring learning methods, lesson content and assessment systems across subjects.

“Curriculum Committee Member-Secretary and Director of SCERT, Ms. N. Latha, delivered the welcome address. Joint Director Dr. A. Pugazhendhi summarised the proceedings and delivered the vote of thanks. Directors, Joint Directors, Deputy Directors, educationists, and teachers from the School Education Department also participated in the meeting,” the official press release said.
