Tamil Nadu schools, colleges shut due to heavy rain

Tamil Nadu: All educational institutions across several districts, Puducherry, Karaikal, Virudhunagar, Pudukottai, Nagapattinam, and in Kerala, to remain closed.

Due to the heavy rain forecast, several districts in Tamil Nadu have declared a holiday for students today, November 24. A Namassivayam, Puducherry Home Minister, has announced a holiday in all schools and colleges in Puducherry and Karaikal.

According to media reports, all schools and colleges across Kallakurichi, Ramanathapuram, Puducherry, Karaikal, Virudhunagar, Thanjavur, Tiruchi, Pudukottai, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, Ariyalur, and Karur districts are closed because of rain.

For Kerala, the Central Water Commission (CWC) has issued a two-day alert in Thiruvananthapuram district, warning of heavy water flow in the Karamana, Neyyar, and Vamanapuram rivers.

“Due to heavy rain warning, a holiday is declared today, Monday, for all government and government-aided schools, private schools, and all colleges in Puducherry and Karaikal,” the official notice said.

As per the CWC advisory, in extreme south Tamilnadu, heavy flows and above-normal flood situations are expected in rivers such as Thamirabarini (East flowing), Chittar, Manimuthar, Kodaiyar, Pazhayar, Tambraparni (west flowing), Vagai, Kodayar, Paralayar, Karmanaiyar over the next two days in districts including Madurai, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, and Kanyakumari.

The district collector MS Prasanth declared a holiday for schools in Kallakurichi district. Additionally, Ramanathapuram district collector Simranjeet Singh Kahlon announced a one-day holiday for schools due to heavy rain.

In view of the forecast for heavy rain across several districts, the Tamil Nadu government has also deployed three teams of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli.
