UGC forms Committee to select 20 Institutions of Eminence

NEW DELHI, FEB 21: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has constituted a four-member Empowered Expert Committee (EEC) to finalize the final 20 Universities to be granted Institutions of Eminence (IoE) status.

The four-member Committee is headed by N. Gopalaswami, Former Chief Election Commissioner of India with Tarun Khanna, Jorge Paulo Lemman Professor at Harvard Business School; Dr. Pritam Singh, Former Director MDI Gurugram and IIM Lucknow; Dr. Renu Khator, Chancellor, University of Houston System as members.

The UGC has received over 100 applications from both public and private higher education institutions, the last date for the applications was extended until February 22. The Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) is likely to announce the names of institutions by April 2018.   

As per the UGC notification, “Consequent upon the approval of Central Government and as per the UGC (Institutions of Eminence Deemed to be Universities) Regulations, 2017 and UGC (Declaration of Government Educational Institutions as Institutions of Eminence) Guidelines, 2017, the University Grants Commission, hereby, constitutes the Empowered Expert Committee (EEC) as per the following composition: The powers and functions of the EEC shall be as per the Regulations and the Guidelines...”
