NEW DELHI: The University Grants Commission (UGC) and Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti (BBS) has come up with a joint initiative of a two-day training programme on content creation and teaching through Bharatiya languages. The commission has asked vice chancellors of universities to nominate two senior faculties to become certified Master Trainers after the training.

According to UGC, the senior faculty members who are nominated must be proficient in the local language of the university location, preferably at the professor or associate professor level (one from Science and another from Commerce/Social Science).

"Promotion of teaching-learning through local languages in higher education is a crucial area of focus in the National Education Policy-2020. The policy emphasises on offering of academic programmes in HEIs through mother tongue/local languages as a medium of instruction, in order to increase access and GER and also to promote the strength, usage and vibrancy of all Bharatiya languages", UGC notice read.

UGC plans to conduct the training programme in offline mode during February-March 2024. The commission has requested the universities to bear the TA/DA of the nominated faculties for the purpose. The remaining arrangements related to accommodation, food and stationery will be done by the host institution (training venue) with the support of Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti.

After the training, the certified Master Trainers will be an asset for their parent institutions to further orient the other faculties on content writing and teaching through Bharatiya languages.
