Modern universities must focus on faculty development, innovation, and strong academic collaboration to build a globally competitive education system, Vice President C P Radhakrishnan said on Saturday. Addressing the ninth convocation of the Central University of Himachal Pradesh here, he noted that a majority of medal winners were women, calling it a strong reflection of growing women's empowerment and their increasing contribution to the nation's progress.

Radhakrishnan called upon students to dedicate themselves to nation-building and uphold the spirit of "Nation First". He said students and youth will play a crucial role in transforming India into a developed nation, and stressed the need for inclusive growth in which no state or section of society is left behind.

He said Himachal Pradesh is known as "Dev Bhoomi" (Land of the Gods) and "Veer Bhoomi" (Land of the brave), and added that the state has made remarkable contributions to the nation's armed forces and is admired for its rich culture, traditions, and hospitality. Upon his arrival at Kangra Airport, the vice president was welcomed by Governor Kavinder Gupta, Agriculture Minister Chandra Kumar, and Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly Jai Ram Thakur.

A ceremonial Guard of Honour was also presented to him. Appreciating the university's "Community Lab" initiative and efforts to create a drug-free campus, the vice president urged the youth to remain vigilant against drug abuse and channel their energy toward constructive nation-building. This was the vice president's first visit to Himachal Pradesh since assuming office. Earlier in the day, he laid a floral wreath at the State War Memorial, paying tribute to soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the nation.
