In a first, Varanasi university to offer postgraduate course in Hindu studies: Report

SSU vice-chancellor professor Hareram Tripathi said that the course was prepared by experts, including senior professors from IIT-Kanpur, JNU, BHU among others.

NEW DELHI: Sampurnanand Sanskrit University (SSU), Varanasi will start a two-year postgraduate course in Hindu Studies from the current academic session, becoming first in India to do so, Hindustan Times reported.

According to the report, SSU vice-chancellor professor Hareram Tripathi said that the syllabus for MA Hindu Studies has been finalised and the course was prepared by experts, including senior professors from Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur (IIT-K), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Banaras Hindu University (BHU) among others.

“The University Grants Commission (UGC) chairman professor DP Singh gave verbal approval to the course that comprises topics like Vedanta, Indian Philosophy, Vedas, Shastrarth (debate on Hindu values), Gyan Mimansa (examination of knowledge), the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, Hindu Arts and language,” HT quoted Tripathi as saying.

Interested students who have completed their graduation are eligible to apply for the course. A new department for this course will be established soon.

“To implement the two-year MA Hindu Studies course a webinar was organised recently under the chairmanship of UGC chairman, professor DP Singh,” the report added. BHU also has plans to start a similar course, it said.
