Jadavpur University puts admission 2025 on hold after HC stays OBC list

WB Admissions 2025: The Department of Higher Education, West Bengal has started accepting applications for WBCAP UG 2025, while Jadavpur University (JU) has suspended admissions 2025 after the HC issued an interim stay on other backward class (OBC) status, as per reports. JU is seeking legal advice, following the HC order, for admissions to the arts and science department.

According to The Telegraph reports, HC has put an interim stay on the West Bengal government’s notice to grant OBC status to 140 sub-castes for reservation in jobs and education.

However, there is no official comment on JU’s decision not to start the admission process.

As per The Telegraph report, a JU official said: “We are yet to decide on admissions following the court order. We’ve contacted our legal counsel, but as of late Tuesday, we hadn’t received their opinion. The UG admission process will begin once we get the advice,”

JU decided to suspend its admissions even after the WBCAP 2025 admission process for 460 government-aided colleges and 17 universities in the state had begun through the online portal.

WBCAP 2025: Teachers' concern over delay

WB state teachers are concerned about the delay in admissions. The university wanted to begin the admission process on May 18, but the education department had prevented, from proceeding, saying the state government was waiting for legal opinion from the advocate general on the OBC reservation.

The head of Bengali department and a member of the admissions committee, Selim Box Mandal, the admission could not begin as JU has sought for legal opinion.

As per The Telegraph report, a professor from the JU in the physics department said: “Even starting the process on June 18 would have been a month after the publication of Plus-II results. But even that didn’t happen.”

WBCAP admission 2025

The WBCAP 2025 admission portal was launched on July 17 by the state’s education minister Bratya Basu, wherein he informed that the admission process will begin before June 19, and there will be no delay causing inconvenience for students and state-run-aided institutions.

WB education minister posted on X and said: “Till 6 pm today, 28,443 students have registered themselves on the centralized online portal of the Higher Education Department. They have made a total of 71,949 applications. Incidentally, out of the total registered students, 251 are from other states.”

Candidates can opt for a maximum of 25 programmes for admission, and candidates can apply for admission without any application fee till July 1.
