WBCHSE clarifies HS Semester 4 exam pattern 2025; adopts ‘2x formula’ for alternative questions

The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) has issued a clarification regarding the Higher Secondary (HS) semester 4 exam pattern 2025. The council has released the subject-wise question paper pattern for the West Bengal HS exams 2025 being held in four semesters on the official website, wbchse.wb.gov.in.

The council said that it will follow a 2x formula to provide alternatives in the WB HS question paper of a subject, where x is the number of questions to be attempted from a topic. The alternative questions will be provided from the same topic. For example, the number of questions to be attempted from a particular unit is two, four alternate questions will be provided.

“In order to remove any ambiguity regarding the question pattern, subject-wise question patterns are being provided along with this notification. Please note that, the 2x formulae has been followed in almost all the cases in regard to providing alternatives in the question paper, where x is the number of questions to be attempted from a certain unit or topic. Alternatives will be provided from the same topic/unit other than exceptional cases,” the council said in the latest notification.

Earlier, the board issued a sample question paper pattern for West Bengal HS semester 4 exams 2025 to give an idea of the number of alternatives which will be provided for each type of question.

WBCHSE had said that the general formula will override any other question pattern notified earlier. In certain unseen questions in language subjects like essay, email-writing etc., the examinee may be provided with more alternatives.

The West Bengal board implemented the semester system for Classes 11 and 12 for the academic year 2025-26. As per the WB HS routine 2025, the exams will be held from February 12, 2026 to February 27, 2026.
