WBJEE 2026: Jadavpur University urges state to let them conduct separate counselling for BTech admissions

Jadavpur University (JU) is considering conducting its own counselling process for BTech admissions soon after the declaration of the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) results in order to avoid delays that have disrupted admissions last year. However, the proposal is yet to receive approval from the West Bengal government, leaving uncertainty over whether the plan will be implemented this year.

Last year, more than 150 of the university’s 1,308 BTech seats remained unfilled after the centralised counselling rounds, prompting JU to organise its own counselling later to fill the remaining seats.

A senior professor at JU said that the proposal given by the faculty council of engineering and technology, has formally been sent to the state government for consideration.

“This is the decision of the faculty council of engineering and technology, and the proposal has been submitted to the state government, but we are yet to receive a green signal,” the professor said. “The faculty council had made a similar proposal last year as well, but it did not materialise,” he added.

University officials say the move is intended to help the institution attract high-ranking students who often choose other institutes due to delays in the centralised counselling process, reported The Telegraph.

Parthapratim Biswas, dean of the faculty of engineering and technology at Jadavpur University, told The Telegraph that the centralised counselling process conducted by the JEE board often begins late, which results in many meritorious students missing out on admission opportunities and ultimately delays the start of classes.

OBC quota row delayed WBJEE counselling last year

The issue of delayed counselling became particularly visible last year when the WBJEE results were significantly delayed due to a legal dispute over OBC reservations in West Bengal.

A ruling by the Calcutta High Court questioned the validity of several OBC classifications introduced after 2010, effectively putting the state’s expanded reservation framework under scrutiny. The resulting legal uncertainty stalled the release of WBJEE results and the subsequent counselling process.

The delay affected admissions across public engineering institutions that rely solely on WBJEE, including Jadavpur University, Government College of Engineering and Ceramic Technology, and Government College of Engineering and Leather Technology.

Teachers at JU had earlier warned that prolonged delays could push the academic calendar back and drive meritorious students toward private colleges or institutions in other states.

University officials believe that conducting counselling earlier could help start classes on time and reduce vacant seats.
