What's new in DU Admission 2020? Things to know

NEW DELHI: The Coronavirus panemic has pushed many institutions to go out of the box and discover possible ways to proceed with the admission process in a way conducive to students. The University of Delhi is not an exception.

The University of Delhi has undergone a lot of changes in the DU admissions process to make the complete exercise of students enrolment smooth, easy and hassle free this year. The admission process of Delhi University this year will be nothing like previous years.

The online registration process of Delhi University merit based admissions started on June 20 and was closed on August 31. Around 3,53,917 candidates have successfully registered and paid the application fee for admission to UG courses this year. The applications are 37% higher than the previous year figures,

No percentage deduction for stream change

The university has decided to do away with the provision of deducing 5% for stream change in admission to BA programmes. Until last year, if candidates had to change their stream from science to humanities for admission to BA programmes, a deduction of 5% marks was done. However, some of the DU colleges had already removed this policy last year only.

The Indian Express quotes Shobha Bagai, dean of admission as saying “The rule was based on the belief that science students score more than humanities and would take a major chunk of seats in BA programmes which are meant for humanities students. However, now that all studies are going interdisciplinary, the rule does not hold any ground. We also wish to make the entire admission process smooth. Thus, we have requested colleges to not deduct any marks, most of the colleges have agreed to this as well.”

Online admission process

The complete DU 2020 admission process will be held in online mode. No candidates have to make a visit to the applied college or department for the document verification process, after the DU cut off release. There will be no physical verification and candidates have to pay the admission fee online to claim their admissions.

Single form

This year, Delhi University released only single forms for all the colleges. This will remove the restrictions of choosing particular colleges and courses while filling the DU admission form. Candidates who have filled the application form of DU 2021 will be able to apply for admission to all colleges and courses.

No sports trial

In the view of Covid 19 situation, the university will conduct no sports trial this year to control the spread of Covid 19 outbreak. The admissions to sports category based seats will be done on the basis of sports excellence certificates attached with the DU application form.

DU cut offs

The cut off of Delhi University will be released late this year, due to several reasons. The results of various state and education boards came out late this year and subsequently the degree and certificates. Also, around 400 students belonging to riots affected north east Delhi region are awaiting for their class 12th results. Thus, the university will open the DU UG registration window for students to upload their class 12th certificates in the second or third week of September. Thereby, the university is expected to release DU cut off 2020 once the process of uploading certificates is completed and remaining class 12th results are out.

Higher cut offs likely

The cut off of Delhi University colleges is likely to be higher this year. The record number of registrations and unprecedented class 12th CBSE results have given rise to the speculations of higher cut off score. The global pandemic has forced a lot of students who were planning to study abroad to restrict themselves within the country.

The Times of India quotes Jaswinder Singh, principal of SGTB Khalsa College as saying “The first couple of cut offs will be on the higher side due to the large number of applications. Many students could not go abroad to study due to the pandemic, so chose DU.”

Another reason being, the candidates who are aiming for entrance examinations such as JEE Main, ICAR AIEEA and NEET might have also applied for DU admissions, due to the delay of these examinations this year. It might give rise to the cut off score for science subjects this year.
