4-year integrated B.Ed programme to begin next year, says HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar

NEW DELHI, FEBRUARY 9: Starting next year (2019-20), the government will begin offering the four year integrated Bachelor in Education (B.Ed) course with an aim to improve the quality of teaching in the country. The course will be conducted in three streams- B.A, B.Com and B.Sc. The curriculum has been finalized by the National Council for Teacher Education, a statutory body responsible for coordinating teacher education.

Early last year, the government had stated that the new 4-year integrated programme will be launched while scrapping the ongoing 2-year B.Ed programme. After its implementation, the course will save aspirant’s one year since they will be able to join it immediately after 12th. Currently, students have to complete their graduation before joining the 2-year B.Ed programme.

While addressing principals of Kendriya Vidyalayas and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas in a conference, HRD minister Prakash Javadekar said that teaching in india is that last career choice of many due to poor salary and extreme teacher-student ratio (especially in government schools). The objective is to make it a professional programme so that students select this career out of choice and not a leftover profession.

The minister also stated that 15-20 states will conduct examinations from this year for classes 5-8  after scrapping the no-detention policy.
