55% students at Kashmir University girls, says President Droupadi Murmu

Speaking at 20th convocation of the University of Kashmir, President Droupadi Murmu said women are ready to play a bigger role in country's leadership.
NEW DELHI: President Droupadi Murmu said India has priceless treasures in every field of knowledge and science, and it is the responsibility of the academia to find ways to re-use these in today's circumstances. The President was speaking at the 20th convocation of the University of Kashmir at Srinagar today.
She added that the country is proud of the responsible youth of Kashmir. Urging the students of University of Kashmir to actively participate in social service, she said by doing this, they could bring social change and set an example.
Referring to the university’s motto ‘let us move from darkness to light’, the President said the more the next generation moves towards the ‘light’ of education and peace, the more the country will progress. “The society and country whose youth follow the path of development and discipline, move forward on the path of progress and prosperity,” she added.
Highlighting that 55% students at Kashmir University are girls, the President said women and girls are ready to play a bigger role in the leadership of the country. She expressed confidence that the 'Nari Shakti Vandan Act' 2023 will prove to be a revolutionary step towards women-led development in the country.
The President also encouraged students to promote sustainable development. She said the lessons of sustainable development are part of Kashmir's heritage and Kashmir University should work towards preserving the Himalayan ecosystem. She appreciated the work of the university on glaciology and biodiversity conservation. She expressed confidence that the university would work at a fast pace in all such areas.

The President said that in the National Education Policy emphasis has been laid on Indian Knowledge Systems. Giving an example, she said the work done by an expert, Suyya, about 1,200 years ago, to save the city of Srinagar from the floods in Jhelum was an initiative in hydraulic engineering.
