AIIMS MBBS Round 2 Counselling preponed from August 3 to July 11

NEW DELHI, JULY 10 : The second round of counselling for admission to MBBS courses available in all campuses of AIIMS has been preponed to July 11 from its earlier schedule of August 3. The announcement by AIIMS brought a major relief to students who stared at losing the opportunity for a possible seat through AIIMS second round counselling.

As per the earlier schedule, candidates who had chances to get seat in AIIMS through second round were left with no option but to necessarily opt for a seat in NEET All India Second Round counselling as the dates for second round of AIIMS would only open after the completion of Second Round of NEET All India Quota counselling.

This also meant that the campuses of AIIMS would have ended up with candidates with the lower rank in the merit list. In addition to this, there are high chances that the seats of AIIMS are left vacant like 24 seats were vacant for the open round of counselling last year.

An open letter to Mr Nadda

Careers360 had written an open letter to Union Health Minister J P Nadda , appealing for a quick resolution of this pain point to help competent MBBS aspirants gauge their admission chances in better ways.

Also, once a candidate accepts NEET All India quota seats and joins the allotted college, it becomes almost impossible for him/her to take part in other counselling as there is heavy cost attached to the  forfeiture of a seat and the original documents remain in possession of the college where one joins, for verification and other official purpose.

This is why the conflicting schedule had left many eligible candidates confused whether to participate in the second round of counselling for 15 % All India Quota or wait for the round two of AIIMS MBBS counselling.

The stressful situation arose due to the strict counselling rules laid down by the regulatory bodies of these exams. Currently, medical aspirants have just three options to fulfil their dream of becoming a doctor which are to take these entrance exams namely NEET, AIIMS, and JIPMER. NEET is the largest among the three as it offers admission to 65,000 medical seats. Among the many reason that NEET was introduced, one was to rescue students from applying to multiple entrances at national, state and college-level. Even after this, the counselling process which is conducted at the national and state level remains a complicated task for the medical aspirants.

The second round of counselling 15% All India Quota seats was conducted by Directorate of General Health Services (DGHS) on behalf of Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) from July 6 to July 9 and the result is scheduled for July 12. The selected candidates in round two are required to report at the allotted college by June 22 and after the allocation of seat they cannot resign or surrender the seat if joined in the said period.

This goes without saying that the cream layer of the students who take NEET are allotted seats in the counselling for 15% All India Quota. Many of these candidates also participate in the counselling for MBBS seats available in AIIMS Institute. Now, the students who have been allotted AIIMS, New Delhi in the first round will not leave their seats as it is the most sought after college of the country but candidates who had a chance for a seat in the second round of AIIMS counselling to other AIIMS Institutes would like to compare the colleges that they may get through AIIMS counselling versus the one they get through centralised counselling conducted by MCC.

AIIMS invites students up to four times the number of seats available in each category. To wait for the second round of AIIMS counselling with the earlier schedule would have involved a much higher risk from the student.
