ASSEB new Assam board for exams, certificates; assembly passes bill merging SEBA, AHSEC

NEW DELHI: The new Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB) has replaced the Secondary Education Board of Assam (SEBA) and Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC). The state assembly passed the bill to merge the two different boards into one for the state education system till Class 12 on February 26, 2024.

As per the ASSEM bill, the power and duties of the board include prescribing curriculum, syllabus for students of Class 4 to 12; conduct exams; publish results; grant passing certificates; award scholarships and prizes; prescribe textbooks; recognize schools and put forth regulation conditions; organise seminars and provide teacher training among others.

The bill has been introduced and passed “to provide for the establishment of the School Education Board, Assam to regulate, supervise and develop Secondary Education in the State of Assam by merging the existing Board of Secondary Education, Assam and Assam Higher Secondary Education Council.”

The new board will be responsible for conducting exams and handing out certificates to students and will not have a role in deciding the curriculum or evaluation of schools, said state education minister Ranoj Pegu during the discussion on ASSEM, as per a PTI report.

In November last year, the Assam cabinet approved the merger of SEBA and AHSEC into a single board. SEBA was responsible for conducting Class 10 board exams while AHSEC used to conduct Class 12 board exams. The announcement of merging the two state education boards was made in June the same year. State chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had announced scrapping of Class 10 board exams from 2024 session along with formation of a new single board.
