Attendance over 60% in Classes 10, 12 in KVs: Education Ministry

NEW DELHI: Over 60% students attending Classes 10 and 12 in Kendriya Vidyalayas are now attending school, said the ministry of education in a statement on Monday. However, attendance in Classes 9 and 11, that do have board exams at the end of them, is less than half. The KVs are centrally-run schools that started reopening “in a phased manner” from October 2020, the statement added.

According to data compiled on February 11 and shared by the education ministry, attendance is 65% in Class 10 and 67% in Class 12. All Kendriya Vidyalayas are affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The CBSE 2021 exams begin on May 4 for both Class 10 and Class 12.

In classes that won’t be writing the CBSE 2021 exams, however, attendance is significantly lower -- an average of 42% in Class 9 and 48% in Class 11 dare “physically attending classes all over the country”, says the statement.

SOP for school reopening

“These figures are dynamic and trends indicate consistent increase every day. Face-to-face classes for Class 1 to 8 have also been started in some KVs where state governments have permitted [reopening of] schools for junior grades,” added the statement. School authorities are contacting parents to encourage them to send their children, the statement said. Most states have now reopened schools for at least some classes but in most places, attendance is still voluntary although states have been instructed to follow the health ministry’s SOP for school reopening.

“The SOPs [standard operating procedures] issued by the state and central governments are being followed completely in view of the corona pandemic,” added the statement. “All KVs are clearly advised to follow staggered timings for the students of various classes and ensure adequate safety measures including maintenance of proper physical distance in the classrooms.”

For children still not attending school, online classes are continuing.
