NEW DELHI: The Banaras Hindu University (BHU), on Monday, said that offline classes are suspended and called for early Holi holidays from Tuesday as COVID-19 cases continued to increase in university premises.

The decision was taken after a review meeting chaired by the Vice Chancellor on Monday “in light of rising cases of COVID-19 positive students in the hostels and “the increasing number of COVID-19 positive cases in the hospital”, a university statement said.

The university also said that online classes will be held for students as per schedule after the holidays and that exams will be held online if the situation with COVID-19 positive cases is similar or worse.

BHU, through its official social media handle, said: “In wake of rising COVID-19 cases, it is feared that the situation may worsen in coming days, hence, students are encouraged to leave the hostels by taking their books and study material and continue their studies through online classes and take the examination which may be conducted in online mode, if the situation demands.”

The university has also asked students to avoid gatherings in the university hostels. A review meeting to re-assess the situation will be held in the first week of April, the university informed.
