Cabinet approves setting up of 157 nursing colleges

Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman had earlier announced the expansion of medical educational facilities, as a part of Union Budget 2023.

NEW DELHI: The Cabinet on Wednesday, April 26, has given the nod to set up 157 new nursing colleges at a cost of Rs 1,570 crores. The new nursing colleges will be constructed at close quarters with the existing medical colleges.

The announcement about the same was made by Director general of Press Information Bureau (PIB), Rajesh Malhotra on Twitter. His announcement further informed that as many as 15,700 nursing graduates would be enrolled in the nursing colleges every year.

The initiative aims to provide quality, affordable and equitable nursing education in the country. In addition to this, the co-location of the newly set up colleges with the existing colleges will provide room for optimal utilization of infrastructure.

Earlier on February 1, 2023, the Union Finance Minister of India, Nirmala Sitharaman had announced the expansion of medical educational facilities, with a focus on ensuring better skilling, under which the initiative to construct 157 new nursing colleges was laid.

Apart from the construction of the colleges, minister Sitharaman had announced that the government will take measures to ensure that special skilling is provided in the operation of specialised medical equipment.

"Dedicated multidisciplinary courses for medical devices will be supported in existing institutions to ensure availability of skilled manpower for future futuristic medical technologies, high end manufacturing and research," Minister Sitharaman had announced.
