NEW DELHI: The Union cabinet has cleared the proposal for developing a cluster of Ayurvedic institutions at Gujarat Ayurved University (GAU) campus in Jamnagar. The cabinet has approved a proposal to grant it the status of an Institution of National Importance (INI) making it the first Ayurveda institute to join the ranks of the Indian Institutes of Technology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences and Indian Institutes of Management.

Prakash Javadekar, Union Minister of environment, forests and climate change and for information and broadcasting, said that the institute will be developed as a cluster and the government will bring a Bill in the Parliament in this regard. Presently, four institutes and centres on Ayurveda are operating from the university campus.

The institutes which are likely to be developed as a cluster are the Institute for Post Graduate Teaching and Research in Ayurveda; Shri Gulabkunwarba Ayurveda Mahavidyalaya; Indian Institute of Ayurvedic Pharmaceutical Sciences; and Maharshi Patanjali Institute for Yoga and Naturopathy Education and Research.

Javadekar added: “It is also the first Ayurveda institute in the country to get the INI status which will help in popularising Ayurveda around the world.”
