CBSE plans two papers for class 10 Mathematics

NEW DELHI, SEPTEMBER 26: Class 10 candidates of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) might have an option to opt from two types of mathematics test papers in 2019. In the upcoming session, CBSE plans to introduce two types of mathematics papers- standard level and existing level. Students have to make the choice between the two papers at the time of application.

As per reports, the syllabus for both the standard level and existing level papers would be same. However, the difficulty level for the same would be different. The initiative has been taken keeping in mind students who might not be inclined to pursue mathematics in future programmes. Students who do not want to study mathematics further can answer the existing paper. The scheme had earlier been discussed in May this year.

CBSE has constituted a 15-member team to assess the process. The committee consists of university and school experts in mathematics besides National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) members. For now, the scheme is going to be launched on a pilot basis from March 2019. Depending on its success, it would be extended to CBSE class 12 exams, too.

The difference between the two papers is that the standard paper would have questions from applied mathematics. It would require analytical thinking skills on the part of the student.

The concept of introducing two papers for a paper is not new. The Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education and International Baccalaureate also offers fexible papers.

CBSE class 10 exam is expected to be held between the first week of March to April, 2019. The results would be out by the fourth week of May.
