Chandigarh University students protest over videos of women students surfacing on social media

Chandigarh University students held protest on campus past midnight after a woman student sent videos of other women students to a youth.

CHANDIGARH: Students of Chandigarh University in Punjab's Mohali held a protest on the campus after videos of several women students were posted on social media, police said Sunday. The protest was held on the university campus located at Ludhiana-Chandigarh road past midnight. The woman student who was involved in sharing the videos online has been apprehended. She had made videos of some women students and sent those to a youth in Shimla who allegedly uploaded those on social media, they said. Police said an investigation into the matter was underway.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann requested people to avoid rumors. "Sad to hear about the unfortunate incident at Chandigarh University...our daughters our respect...a high-level inquiry has been ordered into the incident...severe action will be taken against whoever is found guilty...I am in touch with the administration...I request everyone to avoid rumours...," he tweeted in Punjabi.

Punjab Minister for School Education Harjot Singh Bains asked the students of the university to stay calm and assured them that the guilty will not be spared. "It is a sensitive matter and concerns the dignity of our sisters and daughters. We all, including the media, should be very cautious. It is also a test of ours as a society," Bains said in a tweet.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that culprits will get punishment. "In Chandigarh University, a girl recorded objectionable videos of many girl students and made them viral. This is very serious and shameful. All the culprits involved in this will get the harshest punishment. Victim girls have courage. We are all with you. All act with patience," he said in a tweet.

National Students' Union of India (NSUI) demanded justice for girl students and tweeted, "What happened in #chandigarhuniversity is annoying and shameful. We demand fair investigation & strict action against the culprits, who involved in this matter. We appeal all the students to remain calm, NSUI is with you in this fight till justice is served."
