NEW DELHI: The Central Board of Secondary Education, or CBSE, will conduct the remaining board examinations for Class 12 only in 29 main subjects. For Class 10, the handful of remaining exams will not be conducted at all. No new dates have been announced yet.

This decision, announced on April 1, 2020, was made on the advice of the minister for human resource development, Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’. He said via social media that he has advised CBSE to hold examinations only in subjects that are “required for promotion to the next class and maybe considered crucial for admissions in higher educational institutions”.

For Class 12 students in whole India, CBSE will conduct examinations for a handful of subjects including business studies, geography, Hindi (elective and core), sociology and others. The complete list is given below below.

According to the CBSE’s statement, the remaining Class 10 board exams will not be held at all except for students in north-east district of Delhi whose examination was disrupted by communal riots in February. Only a few elective subjects were remaining.

Exams and subjects

For north-east Delhi, the subjects for which the board examinations will be conducted for Class 10 include Hindi (Couses A and B), English (language and literature), social science, maths, economics, biology, history, physics accountancy and others.

In his tweet, Pokhriyal further said that the board will not hold examinations for the rest of the subjects besides these 29 subjects.

Considering the current lockdown and COVID-19 situation, whenever “the board is in a position to hold examinations, it shall conduct examinations for the 29 subjects by giving adequate notice.” Pokhriyal had earlier announced the students of remaining classes will be promoted on the basis of their internal assessment and mid-term exams. The CBSE circular says this is being done in consultation with the National Council for Educational Research and Training, or NCERT.

Under the directions of MHRD, CBSE had closed all educational institutions and postponed all examinations till after lockdown period.
