Coronavirus: Telangana and Kashmir extend the third phase of lockdown

NEW DELHI: Amid the rising number of positive coronavirus cases, Telangana Government announced the extension of the third phase of the lockdown till May 29. And Jammu and Kashmir may keep its educational institutions shut till the end of the month as well.

The chief minister of Telangana, K. Chandrashekhar Rao, announced the extension of lockdown late on Tuesday.

Out of the 33 districts in the state, six districts are in the red zone, 18 are in orange and nine are in the green zone. The lockdown will be observed in all 33 districts.

On May 3, the prime minister, Narendra Modi extended the nation-wide lockdown till May 17.

The majority of coronavirus cases have surfaced in the capital city Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy and Medchal, the Economics Times reported. Currently, there are 1096 active cases in the state.

Rao in his address assured that certain relaxations will also be implemented after an extensive review after May 15, ET further reported.

Schools in J&K

Meanwhile, the lieutenant governor of Jammu and Kashmir announced that it may not be possible to reopen the schools till May 31.

The announcement was made in a high-level meeting called to review the education scenario in the union territory, reported Northlines, a local newspaper in Jammu and Kashmir.

The LG urged the education department to utilise the lockdown period to take up infrastructural repairs. All educational institutions, the LG further emphasised, should be properly sanitized and fumigated, the Northlines further reported.

To facilitate uninterrupted studies, the LG also gave directions to “install TV sets in far off and tail-end schools” so as to promote e-learning.

Others states

Earlier in April, the Department of Higher Education in West Bengal announced shutting down of all educational institutions till June 10.

According to the official notice, the state government has taken steps to ensure alternatives, such as online classes through secured online platforms, live classes on TV channels to ensure alternative options for classroom education.

All technical educational institutions in Goa will also remain closed till May 31. Popular technical institutions in Goa include the Indian Institute of Technology, National Institute of Technology, Goa Institute of Management and the Goa campus of Birla Institute of Technology.
