Delhi University tightens security before Holi to prevent hooliganism

NEW DELHI: The University of Delhi has tightened security at the DU campus, hostels and colleges during the Holi celebrations to prevent acts of hooliganism, especially acts against women students.

“In coordination with the law and order authorities, Proctorial board, Dean Students' Welfare office and security personnel, the University is determined to maintain strict vigil and enforce discipline so that nothing untoward happens under the garb of festivities,” said a statement from the Delhi University.

According to the statement, the DU administration will initiate strict disciplinary action against disturbances during the Holi celebrations under the university statutes and ordinances. A joint control room has been established on the north and south campuses of DU as part of the security measures. There will also be patrolling by university security staff and law enforcement officials, the university informed.

“This is to ensure a sense of safety and security so that the sentiment and dignity of any student and staff is not hurt during the Holi festival,” the statement said.

CrPC Section 144 is already in force on the campus due to the COVID-19 situation. The Delhi University has also made it mandatory to wear masks and to follow Covid guidelines. The university also informed that it will be co-ordinating with senior police officials to ensure a safe and peaceful Holi.
