DU asks hostel students to collect belongings

NEW DELHI: With COVID-19 cases on the rise in the National Capital and colleges and universities not likely to open before mid-August, Delhi University has asked students to collect their belongings from their hostel rooms. Students have been asked to inform the hostel authorities in advance prior to visiting the hostel.

Delhi University (DU) put on hold its offline academic activity in mid-March due to coronavirus pandemic, later the Government of India announced nationwide lockdown from March 24, thus forcing many students to rush to their home town or safer places in a hurry.

As per a circular issued by the university administration, students who may have temporarily vacated their rooms are allowed to collect their books, study materials, laptop/computer and other essential personal belongings from their hostel rooms. “Such residents may come to the hostel gate and hostel authorities will help them in handing over their belongings. However, these residents are required to inform the hostel authorities well in advance before visiting the hostels,” reads the circular.

The DU administration has also asked students with disabilities to authorize a person to collect their belongings from the hostel on their behalf.

Earlier last week provost of Mansarowar hostel, a hostel for full-time post-graduate and research students of DU asked students to vacate the hostel premises and leave for home for “their own safety”. The provost order read, “This is to inform the residents of Mansarowar hostel that they have to vacate the hostel premises and return back to their native place (within one week) in view of COVID-19 outbreak. All residents are strongly advised to return to their homes and take precautions as per guidelines issued by the Government of India.”
