NEW DELHI: The Delhi University (DU) academic council will meet today, March 22, to discuss changes in the admission criterion as the university has decided to opt for the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) from the academic year 2022-23. The National Testing Agency (NTA) will be releasing the CUCET 2022 brochure today.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) chairman M Jagadesh Kumar on Monday said the central universities will have to use CUET scores to admit students to undergraduate (UG) programmes.

This year for the first time, the NTA will be conducting CUCET 2022 for the 45 central universities. However, these universities will have the option to choose the admission process.

The Delhi University in its meeting held on March 17 recommended that DU admissions 2022 be solely based on scores of the CUCET. Earlier, the DU UG admission was based on the DU cut-off released by the university based on the Class 12 marks.

On December 10, the Delhi University's Academic Council (AC) had approved holding a common entrance test. The decision was however passed amid dissents from council members. Dissenting members noted that the committee who framed the report did not include AC members.

DU AC members also said that the report only takes into consideration the academic session of 2021-22 which was affected by the pandemic and that any change to "tried and tested" admission procedures can only be justified with data analysis for "substantial period of time".

The DU standing committee in the last meeting was of the view that DU admission to all supernumerary seats, but excluding foreign students be done through CUCET. It was also decided that admission to minority colleges like St Stephen’s and Jesus and Mary, will also be done through CUET 2022 exam.

The UGC chairman had also said the reservation policy of the universities will not be impacted due to the CUET.

As per reports, all central universities including Delhi University (DU), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Visva Bharati University will be conducting CUCET 2022 in the months of June-July. However, AMU has clarified that it will continue with its admission policy.

Meanwhile, the Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA) has called for a boycott of classes today to press for its demands on a series of issues, including one-time regulation for absorption of ad-hoc and temporary teachers. DUTA members said they will be staging a protest outside the Delhi University's academic council meeting today.
