DU teachers to go on strike from March 11 as salaries are delayed

NEW DELHI: Teachers at Delhi University (DU) have called for a strike from March 11 following the non-payment of salaries in 12 colleges for the past six months. The issue is a long-standing one as teachers of 12 DU colleges, who were not paid salaries for over six months, had appealed to the Delhi High Court to resolve the issue.

The decision to hold a strike was taken after the executive council meeting of the Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA) on Monday.

DUTA, in a statement, said: “In many units employees have not received salaries for over six months now. Employees have also not received other dues.”

The teachers also raised the issue of merging the College of Art with the Ambedkar University Delhi after it was de-affiliated from DU. Teachers claimed that the decision was taken “without consulting stakeholders” and “without due processes”.

DUTA said that they will be escalating the issue to the Delhi chief minister, the college principals and other responsible authorities. The teachers have called for a march to the chief minister’s residence on March 15 and a march to the Delhi Lieutenant Governor’s office on March 18.

In September 2020, Delhi’s deputy chief minister, Manish Sisodia, had accused the colleges of diverting teachers’ salaries and had said that the government was hiding the fund provided by the Delhi Government. The 12 colleges in question are funded by the Delhi Government.
