Former IIM Ahmedabad director Errol D’Souza appointed VC of GITAM University
The economics professor will assume the role of vice-chancellor at GITAM in early February next year.

NEW DELHI: Errol D’Souza, former director of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad, has been appointed as the vice-chancellor of GITAM Deemed-to-be University, announced GITAM president Mathukumilli Sribharat via LinkedIn. The professor will assume the role in early February next year. He served as IIMA director from 2017 to 2023.
Sharing his views about the new GITAM VC, the Lok Sabha member said, “In my interactions with prof D’Souza, I have been impressed by how closely he aligns with our new vision - GITAM will be an exceptional knowledge-driven institution advancing on a culture of honesty and compassion to make a difference to the world. In particular, his commitment to the values of honesty and compassion—principles I deeply cherish—will be instrumental in leading us forward.”
D’Souza is a professor of economics at the IIM. He obtained an MA degree in economics from the University of Mumbai and was awarded a gold medal for obtaining the first rank. He completed his PhD from the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) as a UGC research fellow. His areas of interest for research are macroeconomics, development finance and public policy.
The IIMA ex-director has served various positions such as the IFCI chair professor at the Mumbai University and India chair professor at the University Sciences Po in Paris. He has also been a visiting professor of the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla, honorary senior fellow of the Institute of South Asian Studies at the National University of Singapore, visiting scholar at Columbia University, and a visiting professor at the Turin School of Development of the ILO.

Various roles of IIMA ex-director
The professor has contributed to the academic committees of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Indian Council of Social Science Research. He has been associated with the Planning Commission of India and the Reserve Bank of India in multiple capacities, including as a member of the Technical Advisory Committee on monetary policy. He is on the Academic Council of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), the Institute for Human Development, Delhi, and on the advisory board of the International Centre for Development and Decent Work at Kassel, Germany.
Moreover, Errol D’Souza also served as the director of the National Housing Bank and is currently on the Board of Governors of the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy, the Rajasthan Shram Sarathi Association, Udaipur, and the India Gold Policy Centre.
