New Delhi: The total GATE 2021 qualifiers dropped to 17.8% as compared to the previous year’s 18.8% despite flexibility in norms, according to the Time of India report. GATE 2021 exam was conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay on February 6, 7, 13 & 14. GATE 2021 exam has two new subjects include Humanities and Social Science (XH) and Environmental Science and Engineering (ES) making it a total of 27 GATE papers. As per revised GATE 2021 eligibility criteria, candidates in their third year of a UG degree were also eligible to apply.
Deepankar Choudhury, GATE 2021 organising chairperson and institute chair professor, IIT-Bombay said to The Times of India, “The flexibility in norms which allows a huge number of aspirants to appear for the exam does not translate into more exam-ready and high-quality candidates. An increase in the total number of aspirants does not necessarily increase the percentage of qualifiers.”

GATE 2021: Advantage for third-year qualifiers
The report stated that the third-year students who qualified GATE 2021 exam can use their score next year on completion of their UG degrees since the validity of their score is for three years, i.e., till March 2024.
“There are around 10.6 % candidates from the 3rd year who qualified the exam. If the third-year part is omitted, the percentage of non-third-year candidates qualifying the exam has increased. Therefore, the percentage of qualifiers in 2021 was increased to above 20%,” he added.
The COVID-19 pandemic has not impacted the candidate’s performance and even the attendance numbers were the same as compared to previous years. “COVID-19 also made some students engage in self-study, while there were others who had faced a shortage of financial and digital resources that may have impacted their scores,” he further said, as per the TOI report.
