The IIT Council has proposed a major overhaul of MTech and PhD programmes across IITs. Under the plan, MTech degrees would move to a dual-track structure offering both research-focused and industry-oriented pathways, along with compulsory internships and multidisciplinary course options.
For PhD programmes, the reforms suggest adopting a “project-first” approach, reducing completion timelines, strengthening industry partnerships, and encouraging research aimed at developing tangible products. Committees will oversee the rollout of these changes. In addition, a Prime Minister Research Chair scheme is planned to fund 120 fellows working in priority areas.
