GATE Previous Year Cut-off: CS, Environmental Science record 30 marks; five papers at 40

The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, the organising institute for the 2026 examination, has released the previous-year Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) cut-off data. The previous-year GATE qualifying cut-off reached 40 marks in five test papers, including Architecture and Planning, Ecology and Evolution, Metallurgical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering and Humanities and Social Sciences (English and Sociology).

The general category cut-off varied across papers, with several engineering and science papers recording qualifying marks below 30.

GATE Previous-year Cut-off: Paper-wise

Among the major engineering papers, the GATE cut-off was 30 marks for computer science and information technology (CS) and environmental science and engineering. Civil Engineering recorded a cutoff of 28.7 marks, while electrical engineering had a cutoff of 27.7 marks.

The cut-off for electronics and communication engineering and data science and artificial intelligence stood at 26.4 marks each. Candidates can go through the paper-wise GATE cut-off marks below.

Factors determining GATE cutoff

Several factors can affect the GATE qualifying cutoff, including:

• Difficulty level of the paper
• Number of candidates appearing for the paper
• Overall performance of candidates
• Marks scored by the top-performing candidates
• Distribution of marks
• Number of sessions for the examination
• Normalisation of marks for multi-session papers

As per the data of GATE 2026, a total of 7,97,434 candidates appeared across all 36 test papers.

Meanwhile, GATE registration is underway, and the closing date of regular online registration (without late fee) is September 27. Closing date of extended online registration (with late fee) is October 5. For more details, one can go to the official website.
