Haryana district education officer booked for accepting bribe of Rs 2 lakh, demanding more

Ramphal Dhankar, demanded Rs 10 lakh bribe in lieu of ensuring the purchase for the school desks. He already took a Rs 2 lakh bribe previously.

CHANDIGARH: The District Education Officer in Haryana's Nuh was caught red-handed accepting a bribe, officials of the state Vigilance Bureau said.

The officer was taking the bribe in lieu of facilitating the purchase order for supply of school desks in favour of the complainant, they said. "The accused, identified as Ramphal Dhankar, was demanding a bribe Rs 10 lakh in lieu of ensuring the purchase order for the supply of school desks in favour of complainant.

"These desks were to be supplied in various schools of Nuh. The accused had already taken Rs 2 lakh bribe," an official statement said here on Tuesday. "The complainant later approached the Vigilance Bureau.

Accordingly, a trap was laid and the officer was caught red-handed accepting the bribe," it said. A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against the accused, it said.

In similar news, a teacher in Madhya Pradesh was sentenced to five years in jail and fined for Rs 30,000 after taking a bribe of Rs 2,000 for a guest teacher. Under the prevention of corruption act, special court Judge Sudhashu Sinha said: “Indulgence of public servants in corruption is a huge problem which is decaying the society. Corruption was shaking off the foundation of democracy and rule of law. To be lenient to such accused was contrary to tenet of law and adopting a tough stance was the need of the hour."
