Health ministry to establish AIIMS in Madurai; gazette notice released

NEW DELHI: On July 3, 2020, through a gazette notification, centre has notified to establish the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. It is expected that the medical institute in Madurai will ramp up the medical facilities in the state, when functional. The Institute of National Importance (INI) in Madurai will be built on 222.24 acre of land at Thoppur. PM Narendra Modi, on January 27, 2019, had laid down the foundation stone of the institute.
The notice of the Gazette of India mentions that “In exercise of the powers conferred by the proviso to sub-section (1) of section 3 of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Act, 1956 (25 of 1956), the central government hereby establishes the All India Institute of Medical Sciences at Madurai in the state of Tamil Nadu.” Check the official notice below of the establishment of AIIMS Madurai.

Welcoming the decision on establishing the AIIMS in Madurai, the Member of Parliament, Su Venkatesan through his Twitter account has shared that, “Happy news! Su. Venkatesan MP, The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) today issued an official announcement to Madurai AIIMS in the Government of India.” The tweet can be checked below.

Earlier on December 21, 2018, answering the questions on AIIMS institution in Lok Sabha, health minister Ashwini Kumar Choubey had clarified that the approved outlay for establishing AIIMS Madurai will be Rs. 1,264 crore, while the project will be completed by September 2022.
According to the health minister, two AIIMS will be established in Jammu and Kashmir, Bihar, Jharkhand, Gujarat, Assam, Himachal Pradesh and Haryana by February 2025.
