NEW DELHI: The Government has approved setting up of 10 Hospitality and Tourism Education Institutes and upgrading 3 hospitality institutions during the last 10 years, the Union minister for tourism and culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat told the Lok Sabha today. Of them, four are yet to be operational. The data shared by the government also revealed that hundreds of seats remain vacant in State Institutes of Hotel Management.
The minister highlighted some of the innovative measures implemented in these institutes to enhance the quality of hospitality education. This includes industry partnerships, modern curriculum, practical training, mentorship programmes and alumni engagement. He also informed that “SIHM Kakinada is yet to be operational. Once operational, these would also be applicable for SIHM Kakinada.”
The State Institute of Hotel Management (SIHM) Gorakhpur, which got the government approval on September 7, 2021, was allocated Rs 16.5 crore. However, no amount has been disbursed till February 2025. The Food Craft Institute (FCI) in Baran, Rajasthan, which got the nod on November 18, 2016, was allotted Rs 6.45 crore and received Rs 4.36 crore. The institute will be operational from next academic year.
“Practical training is an integral and mandatory part of curriculum in Degree as well as Diploma Program in each of the Institutes of Hotel Management (IHMs)/ Food Craft Institutes (FCIs) affiliated with National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology (NCHMCT). Dedicated Placement Cell in these Institutes collaborate with industry partners in India and abroad for placement of students for Industrial Exposure,” he said, adding that the need to collaborate with industry partners to provide practical training “does not arise”.
