The 3-year skill-based programme will be aligned with the National Skills Qualifications Framework and delivered through IGNOU and Indian Air Force.
NEW DELHI: Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) with the Indian Air Force has launched a skill-based bachelor's degree programme for the Agniveers to equip them with both knowledge and skill components. The new programme is in line with the mandates of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The three-year degree programme will offer multiple entry and exit options. Upon successful completion of the first year with 40 credits, the Agniveers will be awarded an undergraduate certificate and with 80 credits earned in two years, they will be eligible for an undergraduate diploma. This flexible structure allows learners to exit and re-enter the programme as needed.
The programme was launched at an event in the presence of Nageshwar Rao, the vice-chancellor of IGNOU, and Air Marshal Suraj Kumar Jha from the Indian Air Force . The programme will provide the academic knowledge and practical skills according to the needs of the defense forces.
The knowledge component of the degree programme will be imparted by IGNOU, drawing from its diverse programmes available for students pursuing bachelor's degrees in arts, science, commerce, tourism management, and vocational studies (MSME). The skill-based programmes will be aligned with the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF) and delivered through both IGNOU and specialised training establishments within the Indian Air Force.
During the launch ceremony, Nageshwar Rao shed light on the comprehensive delivery mechanism for student support services. These services will be offered to Agniveers to ensure progress in their pursuit of the skill-based programmes. Rao also emphasised that the examinations for the programme would be conducted at various IGNOU centres across the country, catering to the convenience of the Agniveers.
Air Marshal Suraj Kumar Jha emphasised,” the far-reaching implication of this collaborative effort and exhorted it to be a game changer for the Defense Forces particularly the Agvineer to pursue higher education while on the job.”
The launch event took place in a hybrid mode, with the participation of IGNOU's Regional Centres spread across the nation.
