IGNOU launches MA in Arabic in ODL mode; registrations open

NEW DELHI: Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), school of foreign languages has launched a programme for master of arts in Arabic (MAARB) in the online distance learning mode beginning from the July 2022 academic session. Interested candidates can apply for the MA programme on- ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in.

Candidates with a bachelor's degree in Arabic, or bachelor's degree in any other discipline with an advanced diploma, diploma, certificate in Arabic are eligible to apply for the course. In addition to the registration fee, the fee for the two-year Arabic programme is Rs 5,400 per annum. The last date to apply for the IGNOU July 2022 admission cycle is November 7, 2022.

At the launch ceremony moderated by Arabic academic consultant, Tufail Ahmad while programme coordinator, Mohammad Saleem presented a brief on the programme structure.

On the occasion, ministry of external affairs secretary, Ausaf Sayeed, complimented IGNOU for launching an MA programme in Arabic and will be able to offer employment opportunities including diplomatic positions as interpreters among others to those pursuing Arabic language programmes.

Vice-chancellor, Nageshwar Rao appreciated the efforts by the faculty of IGNOU's school of foreign languages in launching the programme and shared how this MA Programme in Arabic has reached more than 1,000 enrolments already, while the online certificate programs in Arabic has 3,000 enrollments. He also said that the only online learning mode of the programme will be launched later which would be more popular among the Indian diaspora in these Arabic speaking countries. He informed that the university has been offering programmes through the e-Vidya Bharti initiative of the MEA to African countries.

SOFL director, Malati Mathur, said: "Arabic is spoken in 25 countries with more than 440 million people and thus presents a huge opportunity to the learners of the language in different spheres including employment in these countries."
