IGNOU launches MA in English programme through online mode

Interested candidates with a bachelor’s degree can register for the MA in English programme at the official website - ignouiop.samarth.edu.in.

NEW DELHI: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has launched a Master of Arts in English programme through Online Mode. The programme was launched in a virtual ceremony where E Suresh Kumar, vice-chancellor of English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad was the chief guest. Kumar congratulated the University for the launch and said that it provides reach with quality.

The interested candidates can register for the MA in English programme at the official website - ignouiop.samarth.edu.in. The programme will be taught under the School of Humanities at IGNOU.

In order to complete the MA Programme, the student may opt for course(s) from any module along with two compulsory courses which will have to be opted for in the First Year. However, if for any reason a student is unable to or not interested in completing the MA Programme, they may exit with a PG Diploma in English after completing 32 credits worth of course.

Eligibility for applying to the programme is a bachelor’s degree or a higher degree from a recognized University. The fees of the programme is Rs 13,600 for the full programme to be paid year-wise. Students will have to pay Rs 6800 per year. Students will also need to pay a registration fee of Rs 200 along with the first year fee.

IGNOU vice-chancellor Nageshwar Rao delivered the presidential address and hoped that the Online Mode would help in enhancing the enrolments in the programme and more prospective applicants will be able to pursue Master Degree in the English language giving them ease of completing the courses at their own time, as per an official statement from IGNOU.

The aim of the Master’s degree in English (MEG) programme is to give the learners a good understanding of English and American literature along with other new areas in literature such as Canadian, Australian and Indian English.

“The learners would develop an understanding of English and other literatures of their choice in their proper historio-critical perspectives. A good knowledge of reading, comprehension and writing skills would be a prerequisite for this programme. It will also allow the learners to specialize in areas of their choice given the modular nature of the programme,” said the IGNOU statement.
