NEW DELHI: Indian Institute of Management, Sambalpur is gearing up to conduct the end-term examination of the first-year students using an online proctoring system.

The institute will be the first to conduct the examination using digital methods. The decision has been taken as a majority of students in the batch of 2019-2021 have left the campus before the examinations. Since March, educational institutes across the country have been shut down to control the spread of coronavirus.

Students will be able to appear for the examination by logging in through their laptop or desktop at their homes in different parts of the country. Approximately 100 students are expected to write the term end exam of 10-12 subjects.

The interface, which will be used to conduct the exam, will also capture the retina movement of the examinees. To prohibit cheating, the exam will be disrupted even if an examinee attends a phone call. Buffer time will be given to students facing internet disruptions during the examination.

“This system of conducting tests online allows more transparency in the process. Moreover, with the help of artificial intelligence, there is no scope of human error in invigilation during the exam,” said Mahadeo Jaiswal, director, IIM Sambalpur. “There is no wastage of paper and we can send the answer scripts to our visiting faculties sitting at their homes online, for scrutiny, quickly and more safely, instead of sending them via the postal system,” he added.

The institute also intends to continue this method of conducting examination even after the lockdown is lifted.

MBA admissions

Due to the nation-wide lockdown, IIM-Sambalpur has also completed the remaining MBA admission process for the current academic year in online mode.

“Although our major admission process as part of CAP 2020 along with the other IIM’s were completed before lockdown, however for the remaining process for around 400 candidates, we had to adopt online proctoring systems for Written Ability Test (WAT) and online video call for personal interview,” said Jaiswal.

Placements and Internships

The institute also announced a 100 percent summer placement for the batch of 2019-2021 of its MBA flagship program.

As many as 85 recruiters participated in the placement drive offering jobs in the field of advertising, apparel, e-commerce, automobile and many more.

Big companies like Boston Consulting Group, Google, Aditya Birla Fashion & Retail, Bajaj Allianz General and Life Insurance, Bajaj Finserv, DSM Group and Ernst&Young made offers.

IIM-Sambalpur is also engaging students in virtual internships programs wherein about 82 students in a batch of 93 are currently pursuing internships in virtual mode.

The highest stipend offered was Rs 1,60,000 in domestic recruitment and the average stipend received was Rs 82,640. The average and median stipend of the whole batch stood at Rs 55,432 and Rs 50,000 respectively.
