'Untimely demise': IIT Delhi MSc student dies by suicide on campus, probe underway

A 31-year-old M Sc Physics student at IIT Delhi has died by suicide after allegedly jumping from a building on the campus this morning, police said. The institute mourns the tragic and untimely demise of the student.

"Our deepest thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family. The Institute is providing all support to them," IIT Delhi said.

The police have launched the investigation. As per the preliminary inquiry, the student entered the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi campus through the main gate around 8 am.

He then went to the Lecture Hall Complex and took a lift to the 6th floor, then allegedly jumped from the front side of the building, a senior police officer said.

Following this, he was rushed to the institute's hospital, where he was declared brought dead. A call was made at around 8:30 am at the Kishangarh police station, and a team reached the campus.

This is the second such case at IIT Delhi since March. A first-year BTech student was found dead in his apartment. Three weeks ago, a second-year student of IIT Bombay was found dead in a hostel room. Sohil, a second-year BTech student, was staying in Hostel 4 of the institute.

IIT Delhi Suicide: Probe underway

The Delhi Police are investigating the case, IIT Delhi said in its statement.

No suicide note has been recovered from the spot; however, a crime team and a forensic science laboratory (FSL) unit were called to collect evidence, police added.

According to the Press Trust of India report, no injury marks other than those attributable to the fall have been found on the student's body, police said. The police are also obtaining the student's counselling records and other relevant information from the institute as part of the investigation.

Rising suicide cases

A 22-year-old engineering student at the Indian Institute of Science Bengaluru allegedly died by suicide in a hostel room on the campus. He was found hanging from a ceiling. This is also the second case of suicide on campus this month.

Recently, a third-year BS-MS student of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Pune, Trina Paul, died by suicide on campus.
