IIT Gandhinagar opens applications for PhD admissions; apply by Sept 28

The Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IIT Gandhinagar) has opened applications for admission to its PhD programmes. Candidates can apply for the PhD programmes through the official website at iitgn.ac.in by September 28 up to 5 pm.

As per the eligibility criteria, candidates should have at least 55% marks or 5.5 CPI in postgraduate degree programmes or 4-year bachelor degree programme in appropriate branches.

Those, belonging to the Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Persons with Disability (PwD) category, should have at least 50% marks or 5.0 CPI.

According to the official notification, IIT Gandhinagar may also use higher cut-off levels for shortlisting candidates.

IIT Gandhinagar PhD Admissions 2026: Registration fee

The institute will admit candidates on the basis of a written test and interview. The selection process will be conducted from October 22 to November 5.

The engineering institute is offering PhD programmes in various areas such as biological engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, civil engineering, cognitive sciences, computer science and engineering, artificial intelligence, earth sciences, archaeological sciences, electrical engineering, integrated circuit design and technology, humanities and social sciences, maritime engineering, materials engineering, mathematics, mechanical engineering, design and physics.

General, and Other Backward Classes (OBC) candidates should have to pay Rs 300 as registration fee, while Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Persons with Disability (PwD) can pay Rs 150 as PhD application charges.

Fellowship for PhD students

The engineering institute has offered different admission categories, including regular and continuing doctoral programme options.

“Regular PhD candidates are full-time residential research scholars, while the Continuing Doctoral Programme allows eligible candidates to directly join the PhD programme, with residency requirement linked to coursework,” the notification read.

Notably, IIT Gandhinagar is also offering fellowship worth Rs 37,000 per month to candidates meeting the specified qualifications. Moreover, those completing two years in a regular PhD programme, students may be eligible for a monthly fellowship of Rs 42,000.

IIT Gandhinagar will admit a limited number of candidates for the interview or written test on the basis of their academic records, statement of purpose.
