IIT Guwahati acknowledges student concerns; announces immediate measures following campus tragedy

NEW DELHI: In response to widespread protests by students at the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT G) following the death of a third-year computer science engineering student, the institute has issued an official statement addressing the concerns raised by the student community. In the statement, IIT Guwahati expressed its deep sorrow over the tragic loss, assured students that their concerns regarding safety and mental health are being taken seriously.
The institute also outlined immediate measures to enhance support services, improve safety protocols, and foster a more secure and supportive campus environment.
"IIT Guwahati acknowledges the deep distress caused by the recent unfortunate incident of a student death on campus and understands the concerns of the student community. The well-being of everyone remains our top priority, and we are fully committed to fostering a safe and supportive environment for all", the media statement read.
Director Engages with Students
The newly appointed Director engaged in a lengthy one-on-one discussion with students, listening to their grievances and suggestions. The Director has assured the student community that the administration is fully committed to resolving these issues and improving overall student well-being on campus.
Immediate Measures Announced
In response to the incident and the concerns raised, IIT Guwahati has outlined several immediate measures aimed at enhancing mental health support and ensuring campus safety. These steps include:

Enhanced Wellbeing Services: The institute is expanding access to professional mental health support, including specialized counselors for both crisis intervention and long-term assistance. These services aim to provide students with the necessary emotional and psychological resources during difficult times.
