IIT Kanpur aims at filing 122 IPRs; taking its total to 1039 IPRs in 2023

NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) has filed 122 intellectual property rights (IPRs) in 2023. Among the 122 IPRs filed, 108 are patents, four are design registrations, three are copyrights, and one is a trademark application, along with four US and two Chinese patents.

The IIT Kanpur said 14% of IPRs have been extended to industrial partners this year. “167 IPRs being granted with 15 technologies licensed,” it added. A gas sensor for room-temperature ammonia detection, a method and equipment for treating industrial wastewater, a tactile watch for the visually handicapped, and a bovine lateral flow immunoassay strip are among the 167 patents.

This success underlines IIT Kanpur's strength in research and innovation, and it is the third year in a row that it has secured the most IPRs in its history, bringing the total to 1,039 IPRs, the institute added.

IIT Kanpur director, S Ganesh said: “We are proud to file 122 IPRs, a record for our institute for the third year in succession. The institute's dedication to research and technology has led to a record number of IPRs, establishing it as a leader in promoting positive change through intellectual contributions. Our scholars' collaboration and stakeholders' support helped us attain this milestone.”

IIT Kanpur dean Tarun Gupta said: “More than publications, inventors are focusing on patent filing and technology transfer to prove reproducibility. IPRs have increased due to a simplified patent filing process, a government policy framework, and IPR management committee support.”

IIT Kanpur topped the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2023 Innovation Category. Additionally, the institute has been honoured with the best-assisted technology initiatives by educational institutes’ award at the Assistive Technology Foundation (ATF) awards 2023 for its excellent contributions to assistive technology activities.
