IIT Kanpur alumnus donates Rs 41 lakh for poor patients at Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology

NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur alumnus, Gopal Sutwala and his family have donated Rs 41 lakh to support the treatment of patients from the economically-weaker sections at the upcoming Yadupati Singhania Super Speciality Hospital of Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology at IIT Kanpur.

IIT Kanpur and the Sutwala family signed an agreement to support the establishment of a bay within a general ward allocated for patients covered under different government health schemes with the 500-bed Yadupati Singhania Super Speciality Hospital.

The agreement was signed by Gopal Sutwala and Kantesh Balani, dean of resources and alumni, IIT Kanpur in the presence of S Ganesh, deputy director, IIT Kanpur; Sandeep Verma, professor-in-charge, Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology and Purshottam Sutwala, brother of Gopal Sutwala.

The institute stated that the Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology is the project of IIT Kanpur for innovations in medicine and healthcare. IIT Kanpur alumnus Gopal Sutwala said, “I wanted to support the treatment of the poor. I am happy that such a project is coming up here in Kanpur and it needs to be supported.”

Sutwala did his BTech in chemical engineering from IIT Kanpur in 1973, and MS from Tufts University, Boston, USA. Sutwala also served as the president of the UP chapter of The Indus Entrepreneurs (TIE) which is a global non-profit venture to support entrepreneurs.

S Ganesh, deputy director, IIT Kanpur, said, “We are thankful to Mr. Sutwala and his family for their generosity towards such a noble cause. This contribution is certainly going to help needy patients who come from lower socio-economic backgrounds.”

Kantesh Balani, dean of resources and alumni IIT Kanpur thanked Sutwala and said, “We are grateful to the Sutwala family for their generosity in supporting the Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology at IIT Kanpur. Their selfless gesture as a true Kanpurite in providing means to strengthen the community is truly heart-warming.”
