NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, a prominent institution in telecommunications, recently conducted a successful three-day training program titled "Design and Development of 5G,5G+ Standards and Indigenous 5G Network" for officers from India's Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

As per the official press release, the programme, held in partnership with National Telecommunications Institute for Policy Research, Innovation and Training (NTIPRIT) and TEC, DoT, offered a thorough exploration of 5G technology and its future progressions, with a special focus on India's indigenous 5G network development.

Rohit Budhiraja from the department of electrical engineering at IIT Kanpur led the training program. As per the official press release, his research group has been vital in developing India's initial indigenous 5G network, now operational on the institute's campus. This technology has also been transferred to the TATA-Tejas network and the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT).

Insights into 5G technology and transmission

As per the press release, during the three-day period, attendees acquired detailed knowledge of the 5G physical layer, network structure, and the complex stages involved in transmitting data from base stations to user devices. The curriculum covered aspects such as setting up 5G network connections, coding, modulation, rate alignment, and various antenna technologies.

Focus on emerging 5G+ standard and innovations

A notable part of the training emphasized the upcoming 5G+ standard, which includes innovations like Ambient IoT, AI, ML applications, and precise positioning systems. As per the official press release, participants gained insights into the operations of the 3GPP standardization body and its various groups, fostering a thorough grasp of the future direction of wireless communication.

Practical experiments in IIT Kanpur's 5G lab

In addition to the classroom sessions, participants were able to visit the 5G laboratory at IIT Kanpur and engage in practical experiments using the operational indigenous 5G network. This practical exposure enabled them to observe the technology in operation, study changes in modulation and coding techniques, analyze data transfer speeds, and generate signals at the physical layer.
