IIT Kanpur inaugurates centre for promoting research in biomedical engineering

A symposium was organised on regenerative and digital medicine during the inauguration of IIT Kanpur’s Mehta Family Centre for Engineering in Medicine.

NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Kanpur) inaugurated the Mehta Family Centre for Engineering in Medicine (MFCEM) to promote research in biomedical engineering innovations. The MFCEM has been set up with the endowment from Rahul Mehta of the Bhupat and Jyoti Mehta Family Foundation (MFF).

The centre aims at developing innovative and sustainable engineering solutions to medical problems. It will focus upon the existing strength of IIT Kanpur and involves faculties from different departments of the institutes such as biological sciences and bioengineering (BSBE), computer science and engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry and cognitive science.

Abhay Karandikar, secretary of the department of science and technology presided over the inaugural ceremony as the chief guest. Along with the inauguration of the centre, a two-day symposium was also organised wherein researchers and scientists from engineering and medicine discussed topics such as molecular medicine, regenerative medicine and digital medicine.

Students showcase research work

Students also showcased their research work at the symposium across the three focus areas of MFCEM through lightning talks, posters and interactions with the distinguished speakers. Other sessions such as the science quiz bowl was also organised.

S Ganesh, officiating director of the IIT Kanpur, said, “IIT Kanpur recognises that the future of innovation in medical technology and healthcare sectors hinges on the convergence of multiple disciplines, with a particular emphasis on the dynamic intersection of engineering and medicine. We express our deep appreciation to Rahul Mehta and the Mehta Family Foundation for their generous contribution towards fostering cutting-edge research in the interdisciplinary domain of biomedical engineering.”

Rahul Mehta, of the Mehta Family Foundation said, “Our priority has been to support quality-of-life initiatives. We have funded over 100 organisations with the vision of advancing healthcare and education to nurture intellectual talent through global academic collaboration. The MFCEM at the IIT Kanpur aligns with the same goal, and through this, we are striving towards furthering research at the intersection of medicine and engineering.”
